boot camp

OFFICIAL Apple Solution http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/

I guess Apple took the HINT from http://onmac.net/

Deconstructing Boot Camp
Written by sHARD
Wednesday, 05 April 2006
It only took a few hours of tinkering and OSx86 community members have discovered a few interesting facts about Apple's new Boot Camp. Here's what we're pretty sure we know so far:

-The Boot Camp application produces a driver disc for Windows XP, giving (nearly) full support for all Intel Mac features.

-The firmware update is what actually provides support for Windows XP, hinting at a new legacy BIOS EFI module, quite similar to the solutions proposed by the community. Yes, this means you can boot the Windows XP disc as soon as you have upgraded your firmware, though you'll be missing many important drivers.

-That of course, opens up the world of Vista, as it could take little to no modification of the current driver set to get Vista working.

-Last but not least, don't forget Linux. A legacy BIOS emulator would add great support for Linux, which largely has drivers to support many Intel Mac features.
More news as we get it!

what is the deal with swap files

Mar. 21st, 2006 | 11:02 am

why do we need swap files ?
i have 1 gig or ram, why does windows want to make a pagefile just a big
i can't defrag my drive properly. plus it slows down my system (drive head has to move all over the place).
i could put it on another hard drive - but then i phsically have to put another drive in the computer. - what a waste hard disks are slow.
if only i could partition my RAM then i would buy 2 gig and use 1gig for ram and the other gig as a ram based swap.

or i could turn it off the page file - what does this actually mean for my system?

linux has a swap partition but it doesn't use it until it has run out of real memory.

itunes music store

Mar. 19th, 2006 | 11:58 pm
music: Ad Astra-Arcturus-La Masquerade Infernale

so i figured i better not get left behind (i was 3 years behind the times when i bought my ipod, I guess i was really attached to my car casette desk, these days my ipod+itrip always travel with me in the car.
Being an apple person it did take me quite a long time to get an ipod (they were in their 4th generation by the time i ordered one)

well anyway last night i took the plunge and purchased a song from the australian itunes music store (ITMS)
i've been wanting to buy some online music for a while but there was never anything worthy of purchase. - sure there was good stuff on the USA ITMS but i dont have a US cc. The Australian store has somewhat a limited range (because its only be running 6 months plus there probably a load of paper work for each record label, and who cares about the australia, its only 2% of the worldwide music market ?)

oh i should mention the song i bought...(re-encoded 2 minute sample here)

"Ad Astra" by Arcturus from the album La Masquerade Infernale originally released 1997 (re-released 2003)
7 mins 40 sec
AU $1.69 (i am yet to see what my credit card looks like, netbank is down atm.)
AAC 128 Kbit/s
as for the sound quality it sounds pretty similar to a 160 Kbit/s mp3.
(compared to a version from limewire)
i'll have to buy the cd from amazon.com to get a better comparison.
i guess if apple had choosen a higher data rate back in 2003 it would be costing them a shitload in upload fee's - 1.5 times.

from wikipedia
Digital restrictions: Streaming to five computers every 24 hours, unlimited CDs (seven with an unchanged playlist), unlimited iPods.
(Formerly: three – then five – computers per 24 hours; and 10 unchanged playlist burns.)
